The portrait is a representation of a person.

The term refers to a work properly pictorial or a drawing, even if by extension can also mean the photograph of a person or, in literature, a detailed description of a person.

In the traditional division into genres photographic portrait is the one who first deserves to be considered: this type of recovery is with the landscape, the first to have been practised.

The ability to obtain, at low cost, realistic images of whoever was willing to pose for a few moments to the front of a camera was indeed one of the reasons determinants which have allowed the emergence of photography.

The term "portrait" generally indicates the resumption close individual and a person isolated from the background. This type of photography seems be the most private of private images but, with the group photo (a portrait multiple), is the representation that plays a greater extent functions of social representation.
